9/14/2012 - ANSELL EXPANDS SANDEL LINE WITH NEW NEEDLESTICK PREVENTION DEVICE

September 14, CHATSWORTH, CA – Recognizing the demand for simple, cost-effective solutions for preventing sharps injuries, Ansell introduces another safety innovation to the SANDEL Engineered Sharps Injury Prevention (ESIP) line. The SANDEL Safety Shield is an innovative needlestick barrier designed to reduce accidental injuries caused when drawing medication from a vial using a needle and syringe.

The Safety Shield, manufactured under license by Mercy Medical Research Institute, provides a protective barrier between the needle and the hand holding the vial. It reduces the risk of accidental injury to healthcare workers and in some cases, exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Unlike many needlestick safety devices, it offers protection when the needle is “in action”, rather than simply covering the needle when not in use.

The Safety Shield is easy to use, cost-effective, and complies with OSHA requirements to use engineering controls1. The Safety Shield is ideal for high risk areas such as pain management, oncology, cath labs, emergency rooms and operating rooms. With approximately 384,000 sharps injuries occurring in U.S. hospitals each year2, the Safety Shield provides a necessary tool to protect healthcare workers from potential needlestick injuries.

Ansell will initially release the Safety Shield in North America with plans to launch globally.

The SANDEL ESIP product family also includes the Change-A-Blade® safety handle, hands-free transfer trays, Z-Friction Drape™ neutral zone, ReCap-It™, Scalpel Disarmer™, and safety scalpels. Also available are SANDEL ergonomic safety solutions, Correct Medication Labeling Systems™ and TIME OUT® products.
